What’s the difference between a conservatory and an orangery?
The main difference between a conservatory and an orangery is the amount of glass used. Typically, a conservatory features floor-to-ceiling glass panels all the way around, with a glass roof.
An orangery, on the other hand, uses brickwork with window panes embedded, usually accompanied by large glass doors. An orangery will have a flat roof perimeter with a central roof lantern, while a conservatory has a pitched roof. The term ‘orangery’ dates back to the Renaissance era, where citrus fruits would be grown inside.
How long do conservatories last?
Atlas Aluminium conservatories last for a minimum of 25 years, though this can be as long as 50 years if they are well maintained. Whereas uPVC is not as durable and may only last 10 to 15 years, our aluminium has been weather tested and all glass has been toughened to BS EN 1279/12150 standards. Maintenance comes even easier with the self-cleaning glass option, giving you efficient, secure and beautiful home extensions for years to come.
